Skills for University

Learn English to prepare you to study a master’s degree at James Cook University Brisbane. Students who complete this course will have a range of academic skills to take them to Masters university study, including:

  • Essay, data reporting, summary, reflection and business letter writing
  • Speaking competency in presentations and tutorials on a range of academic topics
  • Ability to comprehend complex academic reading texts such as business case studies
  • Ability to comprehend complex listening texts (academic lectures) on a range of issues

The course uses an IELTS based model to develop your academic skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Your self-study program allows you to consolidate and practice your grammar and reading skills every week. A continuous weekly assessment model and individual feedback allows you to monitor your progress.

Please note: class time can be scheduled anywhere between 8:30am and 7:30pm. Students are responsible for checking their own timetable on the Student Portal each week for class times.

Students are required to be at least 17 years of age, to commence study in English Language programs at Sarina Russo Institute.

All students entering the Bridging English Entry Program will be required to have met the relevant, nationally accepted academic requirements specific to their countries of origin.  In addition, the following the minimum English language requirements are set based on the IELTS empirical research which states English language production improves by half a band score every 10 weeks:

  • IELTS General Training will also be accepted for entry into SRI English courses.
  • Results more than two years old will not be accepted.
  • The SRI placement test will need to be undertaken.
